2007 – 2008
Galena's Third Winter in the Bahamas

Galena running wing-and-wing in George Town,
Grand Exuma Island, Bahama Islands

The Plan

Originally I was to buddy-boat with two of my friends to the Bahamas for the winter. Capt Ron on s/v Lastdance and Capt Tom on s/v Evergreen would join me and we would each single-hand our vessels on this grand adventure. Jane would stay home this year. She would fly down for a visit once I had sailed Galena to someplace warm. So most of the trip would be just the three of us, Tom, Ron, and myself, sailing down the Antlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) to the Florida Keys and then across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas.

This would be my third cruise down to the islands. But it would be a first cruise for Tom. Capt Ron used to live in Florida and had run the ICW before. But he had never crossed over to the Bahamas. For all of us this would be the first time we had single-handed our boats on such a long cruise.

The overall plan was for us to sail down the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk. Then we’d motor down the ICW to Key West. We would make as many off-shore jumps as possible (especially out and around Georgia!). These are sailboats after all, and one really can’t sail very much in the ICW. Then we would head over to Nassau and down the Exuma Island chain to George Town on Grand Exuma island. We would return in the spring via the same route.

The Reality

Just before we were to depart Capt Ron became aware of some medical issues that would prohibit him from joining us. This was a real blow to him and to us. The three amigos became two. We held out some hope that Capt. Ron might be able to join us later, but that turned out not to be the case. So it would be only Tom and I on this adventure. But once Tom and I had made our way down to Miami Tom would decide to stay in Florida and spend the winter cruising the Keys; mostly exploring around Marathon.

I would modify my plan a bit and cancel my exploration of the Florida Keys. Instead I’d sail from Miami to Nassau and then on down to George Town, Grand Exuma Island, Bahamas. I was going to go it alone. But I would be ‘alone’ only in the context of making my own plans and not relying on others. As it turned out I spent most of the trip buddy-boating with others. Most notably I cruised with my new best friends Tom and Joyce of s/v Stella Polaris and Bill and Sarah of s/v Moonlight Serenade. Jane did, indeed, visit and accomplany me on the leg from Nassau to George Town.

The return run north would see me diverting a little to the east to sail the western shore of Eleuthera Island before heading further north to go through most of the Abacos before heading back to Florida. Finally I would sail Galena up the east coast and back to Maryland and into her slip at Kent Narrows. The voyage would take about seven months.
