On to Bahamas 2007-2008

2005 – 2006

It's the first of November and we're just about ready to take off on our second winter of cruising. We plan to leave our slip in Mears Point Marina, Kent Narrows, Maryland, next Saturday 5 November 2005… Monday at the latest. There are just a couple more projects that I'd like to finish for Galena before we go. And Jane still has to complete the provisioning.

As with our last adventure our daughter, Michelle, will be updating our web site during the voyage with the log entries and pictures that we will send to her as the opportunity presents.

Our current plan is to head down to Beaufort, NC via the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). We should arrive in Beaufort about a week after we leave here. That would be 3 days down the Chesapeake Bay and 4 days down the ICW.

Then after waiting for a good weather window we'll head offshore to a spot in the Atlantic Ocean at about 27N-65W (900 miles off shore and a few hundred miles south of Bermuda). Then we turn due south for another 600 miles to Virgin Gorda, BVI. That's a total of 1500 miles of serious offshore sailing. It should take anywhere from 12 to 16 days.

After cruising the British Virgins for a month or so we will head west for a leisurely cruise through the US Virgin Islands, then sail along the southern coast of Puerto Rico, and along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic to Luperon. We'll then head northwest through the Bahamas to Nassau, then west to Florida, wrapping it all up with a 4-day offshore passage up the US East Coast back to Beaufort, NC. Then we will once again drive up the ICW north to Norfolk, VA, followed by the 150-mile sail back up the Chesapeake Bay to Galena's home slip in Kent Narrows, MD.

The dogleg in the initial offshore route described above is used to get us far enough east to be able to tolerate the easterly winds we expect to encounter at about 25N latitude. This route adds about 150 miles to the rhomb-line route, but I've been told by more than one voyager: “No matter how far east you go, when you're 200 miles from the BVI you'll wish you were further east.”

This is the voyage we had originally planned to take during the winter of 2004-2005. The weather and my impatience caused us to change our plans that year. This year we are better prepared for this kind of trip. And this year we will stick to our plan.

Below is the planned route (yellow) vs the actual track (red). You can use Google Earth to view the route interactively, zooming in to area's of interest.

For those of you who don't know us, here is a picture of the ship and crew.

And t his is Galena's boat card. It was designed and drawn by Jane and is without a doubt the best looking boat card in existance.
